Motion, Community, and Water Safety: Recapping the Elite Amenity 5K

On June 27, runners and walkers gathered at Flushing Meadows–Corona Park for the Elite Amenity 5K, hosted by Elite Amenity Management in support of Swim Strong Foundation. It was a morning built around movement, community, and purpose — and the energy on the course showed it.

Fitness and water safety, hand in hand

One thing came up again and again when we spoke with participants after the race: running and swimming aren’t separate pursuits — they build on each other. Several runners talked about using swimming as cross-training, and one participant, a longtime competitive diver who later became a swim instructor and lifeguard, put it simply: staying strong in the water has stayed woven through their whole life, on land and off.

Another participant, part of a training group that runs together regularly, described how their crew pushes each other to improve while keeping things lighthearted — proof that fitness goals and friendship aren’t mutually exclusive. “We all want each other to be better,” one of them said, “so we’re doing that together as a group.”

A word on water safety, from the community itself

We also heard from a participant who offered some grounded, practical advice: know where the lifeguards are, don’t go further than you’re prepared for, and never let a child near water unsupervised — even in shallow water. It’s a good reminder of what Swim Strong Foundation calls situational knowledge of water: not fear of the water, but preparation for it. Knowing the environment, respecting it, and building the skills and confidence to move through it safely.

That’s the same idea behind Know Before You Go!®, our water safety education program — helping people read a water environment before they ever step in.

Advice from the course

Race-day wisdom came up too. One participant, a longtime distance runner, offered a simple tip echoed by several others on the course: hydrate the day before an event, not just the morning of, and stretch afterward to recover well. Good advice for any 5K — or any day at the pool.

Thank you

None of this happens without the people who show up to make it possible. Thank you to Elite Amenity for organizing and hosting the event, to Bolt Fitness for their partnership and support, and to Joyful Juices for keeping everyone refreshed along the course. And thank you to every runner, walker, and volunteer who turned out on a beautiful morning in Queens.

Congratulations again to our winner, and to everyone who crossed that finish line.
