Discover the Blue Economy: Where Water Meets Opportunity

A special invitation to our Swim Strong families

New York City’s waterways connect us to more than recreation. They support jobs in marine science, engineering, shipping, clean water, flood protection, and more. Together, these fields are part of the Blue Economy, with career paths ranging from apprenticeships and on-the-job training to college degrees.
As Swim Strong Foundation celebrates 20 years of helping children and adults become safer, more confident swimmers, we’re inviting our families to explore these opportunities together.
Join us for an afternoon with elected officials and Blue Economy professionals. Learn what’s happening on our waterways, discover possible career paths, and ask what these changes could mean for your family and community. No prior knowledge needed—just curiosity.

Why Swim Strong?

For 20 years, we’ve seen how swimming skills and confidence can open doors—from lifeguarding and competitive swimming to public service and other careers. Introducing families to opportunities connected to the water builds on that work, especially for communities that haven’t always had access to this information.

The afternoon

1:00–2:00 PM: A conversation with elected officials
Hear about policies and legislation shaping our waterways, neighborhoods, and future opportunities, with:

  • Rebecca Seawright, NYS Assembly Member
  • Jake Blumencranz, NYS Assembly Member
  • Selvena Brooks-Powers, NYC Council Member
  • Shekar Krishnan, NYC Council Member

2:00–5:00 PM: Blue Economy panel and networking
Explore the work, careers, and opportunities in this growing field with:

  • Eric Gardiner, New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC)
  • Greg Pucillo, +POOL and seaweed researcher
  • Meghan Reilly, North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA)
  • Vincent Lee, Principal, ARUP, an engineering and design company
  • Moderator: Meta Brunzema, Pratt Institute
There will be time for audience questions and conversation.
